Team building 101

Welcome to my basic RSRS team building guide.

RSRS is quite  forgiving when it comes to team comp. You can throw almost anything together and they'll work. There are a few pointers however that would make your life easier.

The goal, is to have a team that can progress you through story mode until you reach 4-1-5 VH. Once you reach that stage, lots more team building possibility will open up since you can grind more and more units easily.

Note that this guide doesn't go too deep nor too fancy. Meta and top tier are also not this guide's concern.

1. Basic composition

1-2 healers. The rest damage dealers. Yes it is that simple. Tanks are usually not require but is nice to build 1 up for boss and other stuff. Throwing some utility or mages into the mix can be very helpful as well.

So let's pick our first healer. No reason not to pick Sophia really. Hard to believe but the game actually gives everyone a VERY GOOD healer for free. For second healer you have a few choices as shown below. Plus Mariah who I do not own.

Next slot, we will add Rouge. You can farm his SS from 1-2-12 VH. Now our team looks like this.

We then fill the rest with damage dealers.Which brings us to the second point.

2. Keep your damage dealers diverse

There are 3 physical damage types in this game:
  • Slash: sword, great sword, axe
  • Pierce: rapier, lance, bow
  • blunt: mace, fist
The reason you want to diversify your team is this: weaknesses. Each unit type will be weak against  certain other type. There are exception but these are generally the rule:
  • Slash units are weak against blunt
  • Pierce units are weak against slash
  • Blunt units are weak against pierce
Blunt AOE is especially common in story and daily dungeons. So you really do not want more than 2 slash units in your team. Many people fall into this trap since, seriously, most of the cool units use sword.

With that in mind, let's take a look at this screenshot posted on Reddit team building thread.

Right away you should be able to pick 3 SS with diverse damage type easily.

But will they work well? There is 1 last point you need to be aware; their skills. Also abilities to some extent but skill is more important.

3. Check your units' skills.

While there are many ways to access a unit's detail page (such as tap and hold the unit's avatar), this is my recommended way as it puts all styles together for you.

Top right Menu > Character List > Pick a character > Style

This is also where you can check the stye's weakness against damage type. Top row from left to right: Slash, blunt, pierce, fire. Button row Cold, Thunder, Light, Dark. The lower, the weaker that unit is  against it.

What are you looking for you ask?

AVOID: styles with a mix of physical and magical skills. You can spot them by the little icon on the top right. For example, S Charl. Skill 1 and 3 has lance icon while skill 2 has fire icon. The reason? You have no access to elemental lance yet (they'll be available from CH 7 onwards). Meaning Flame Naga which is a fire element skill  would be completely useless.

LOOK FOR: debuff skills. Especially STR debuff which dominant early game. Mace: Bonecrush. Fist: Submission. Great sword: Flowing Slash.

Later on INT debuff will come into play, and in the far future AGI debuff. For now, look for STR.

So. Based on these 3 points, after I looked through my own rooster, I would come up with something like this.

Both Gray and Gustav have Flowing Slash. And Yohan can inherit Submission from his A style.

And then to our last point.

4. Be flexible!

Don't be shy to switch out your units to best tackle the stage at hand.

For example, CH 3 is full of undead which not only Rouge would deal half damage, they are mostly immune to paralyze as well. Replacing Rouge with Blue or Volcano will give you much easier time. You can also go for more fire power by replacing Yohan with SS Azami even if you don't own her Submission style.

And that's about it guys. I hope you find this useful.
